Clubfoot
Clubfoot is present at birth when a baby’s foot is twisted out of normal position, often inward and downward.
Common causes or risk factors
- Exact cause often unknown
- May be linked to genetic or neuromuscular development factors
Common symptoms
- Foot turned inward or downward
- Stiffness in the foot or ankle
- Smaller calf muscles on the affected side
- Limited range of motion
How it is diagnosed
- Physical examination at birth
- Prenatal ultrasound in some cases
Treatment considerations
- Ponseti casting
- Bracing to maintain correction
- Minor surgery in selected cases
How orthotic care may help
Boots and bar bracing helps maintain correction after Ponseti treatment and reduce relapse risk.
